WHY ENERGY WISE REWARDS? WHY NOW?
As Delaware continues to grow, and as more and more residents acquire large refrigerators, freezers, central air conditioners and other energy-hungry appliances, the demand for energy increases, straining existing supply. Energy Wise Rewards offers leading-edge technology to our residential customers as part of a voluntary program designed to manage energy during periods of highest demand, reduce the need to build costly power plants, and avert unanticipated energy shortages and power interruptions before they occur.
WHY IS ENERGY WISE REWARDS NOW OPEN TO DELAWARE CUSTOMERS?
The Delaware Public Service Commission recently approved the Energy Wise Rewards program for Delmarva Power Delaware customers. Please check our website (www.delmarva.com) frequently for information updates on new programs designed to help you save money and energy.
HOW DOES ENERGY WISE REWARDS WORK?
When you enroll in this voluntary peak-energy management program, we will install at no charge an indoor web-programmable thermostat or an outdoor switch near your central air conditioning unit or heat pump. On select days during times of peak electricity usage, generally June through September, we’ll automatically cycle off and on participating central air conditioners and heat pumps to help reduce the region’s demand for electricity. These events are known as Energy Wise Rewards conservation periods and they occur on Peak Savings Days. In turn, you’ll receive bill credits off your electricity bill for participating.
WHAT IS “CYCLING”?
When a Peak Savings Day is called, your device will receive a radio signal that will put your cooling unit’s compressor into a “conservation mode”. For example, if you elect 50% cycling, your compressor will operate half the time it did during the prior hour. The fan will continue to run, circulating already-cooled air throughout your home.
WHAT CHOICES ARE AVAILABLE TO ME WHEN I JOIN ENERGY WISE REWARDS?
When you enroll in Energy Wise Rewards, you’ll be invited to select (1) the device we will install at your home, and (2) the degree of cycling to which you can comfortably commit and its corresponding Installation Credit.
- Technology – Choose either indoor installation of a web-programmable thermostat or an outdoor switch.
- Cycling Level & Incentives – Choose 50%, 75% or 100% cycling.
- 50% cycling – Your compressor will run half the time it did during the prior hour. Receive a $40 Installation Credit off your electric bill after the device is installed.
- 75% cycling – Your compressor will run 25% of the time it did during the prior hour. Receive a $60 Installation Credit off your electric bill after the device is installed.
- 100% cycling – Your compressor will not run at all during the conservation period. Receive an $80 Installation Credit off your electric bill after the device is installed. This level of participation is only recommended to those who have no one home during the day. It is not recommended to households that have members with cardiac or respiratory conditions.
HOW WILL I RECEIVE MY INSTALLATION CREDIT?
You will receive your Installation Credit for each device installed as a bill reduction within two billing cycles of the installation of your Energy Wise Rewards device(s).
ARE THERE ANY HIDDEN COSTS OR FEES WITH THIS PROGRAM?
No. Participation is totally voluntary and you do not pay to participate.
CAN I RECEIVE ANY OTHER FINANCIAL BENEFITS FROM ENERGY WISE REWARDS?
Yes. Energy Wise Rewards works hand-in-hand with our Peak Energy Savings Credit program available to all electric customers. With Peak Energy Savings Credit, all customers will be eligible to earn credits off your bills for reducing energy use on Peak Savings Days. Delaware customers can receive $1.25 for every kWh you reduce your use below your personal baseline established by us. Energy Wise Rewards will automatically reduce your A/C energy use for you. CAN I PARTICIPATE IN BOTH ENERGY WISE REWARDS AND PEAK ENERGY SAVINGS CREDIT?
Yes. Energy Wise Rewards automatically reduces your air conditioner energy use. Other energy reduction changes you make help reduce your energy use below your personal baseline, and earn you $1.25 per kWh reduced below your baseline.
MAY I SWITCH MY DEVICE TYPE?
Yes. Energy Wise Rewards has been designed to meet your changing needs. You will need to contact the Program Call Center at 1-866-353-5799 to request and schedule the change of devices.
CAN I SWITCH MY PARTICIPATION LEVEL AFTER SIGNING UP FOR ENERGY WISE REWARDS?
Yes. Energy Wise Rewards has been designed to meet your changing needs. During your first year of participation, you will be permitted to switch your cycling level twice (2x). In subsequent years, you will be permitted to change your level of commitment once (1x) annually.
HOW OFTEN WILL THE PROGRAM BE ACTIVATED?
The number of conservation periods depends on many factors, including weather, peak electricity demand, and wholesale energy costs. Energy Wise Rewards is only activated during times of high electricity demand, emergency conditions, or system testing. As such, there may be as few as one conservation period or as many as a dozen. In a typical year, one can expect five or fewer events.
WHEN AND FOR HOW LONG WILL A CONSERVATION PERIOD LAST?
Conservation periods typically occur on select summer weekday afternoons, called Peak Savings Days, and can last anywhere from three to six hours. If PJM requires an event to be called for reliability reasons (a Priority Peak Day), it will last until the situation is resolved; therefore, we cannot state how long an event of this type may last.
CAN AN EMERGENCY PJM-REQUIRED EVENT (A PRIORITY PEAK DAY) OCCUR OUTSIDE OF THE MONTHS OF THE COOLING SEASON?
Yes. This could occur, and in that event your A/C system would be cycled off and on per the Energy Wise Rewards program rules and the customer agreement.
WHAT CAUSES “TIMES OF HIGH ELECTRICITY DEMAND”?
Times of high electricity demand occur when everyone uses a lot of electricity at the same time, creating stresses on a limited energy supply. The frequency of high electricity demand periods has increased as the population and the use of electric appliances has grown, and both have grown tremendously in Delaware over the past 30 years. Energy Wise Rewards is just one way we are managing the rising demand for electricity, to assist in preventing power outages while keeping electricity rates low, deferring the construction of high cost power plants, and helping the environment by reducing emissions produced on hot, humid days.
WILL ENERGY WISE REWARDS AFFECT MY COMFORT LEVEL?
Depending on the level of participation you choose, you may or may not notice that your cooling unit is even cycling during a Peak Savings Day event. The temperature in a typical home may rise 1-3 degrees (at the 50% level), 2-4 degrees (75% level), or 4-7 degrees (100% level). Variables such as home insulation, shaded windows, ceiling fans, and the amount of home foot traffic are some of the things that can also affect the temperature.
HOW WILL I KNOW WHEN AN ENERGY WISE REWARDS CONSERVATION PERIOD IS OCCURRING?
You will receive a notice the day before via your selected notification method in My Account — telephone, e-mail or text message. We will issue a news release prior to the event.
Check your programmable thermostat. When a conservation period occurs, the display will read “Event in Progress” at the top of the screen and the LED located in the center of the control arrows will maintain a steady red light for the duration of the period.
If you have an outdoor switch, you will need to go outside to inspect the device. A red LED will appear in the window of the outdoor switch throughout the conservation period.
AM I PERMITTED TO “OPT OUT” OF A CONSERVATION PERIOD?
All customers are permitted to opt out of up to two non-Priority Peak Days per season. Participants who wish to override a conservation period will need to call our Energy Wise Rewards Service Call Center at 1-866-353-5799. Remember, the automatic cycling of your Energy Wise Rewards device will lower your A/C energy use and help you earn $1.25 per kWh you save.
ARE THERE PENALTIES FOR WITHDRAWING FROM ENERGY WISE REWARDS?
Participants must remain in the program for 12 months after the device is installed or a portion of their initial installation credit may be reversed. At this time, we plan to leave the programmable thermostat or outdoor switch in place in the event of withdrawal. If you are interested in leaving Energy Wise Rewards, please call 1-866-353-5799.
HOW DOES ENERGY WISE REWARDS BENEFIT MY COMMUNITY?
Our customers use more electricity during the summer season than at other times of the year. As the area grows and more new and existing customers install central air conditioners, demand for electricity reaches higher and higher peaks in the summer, putting a strain on the power system. Participating in Energy Wise Rewards is a way for all of us to avoid paying for the construction of new power plants built primarily to operate only during times of very high electricity demand for a handful of hours per year.
HOW DOES ENERGY WISE REWARDS KEEP ENERGY RATES LOW?
Demand for electricity in our area is rapidly rising. During the “peak demand” times of summer, Energy Wise Rewards works to reduce electricity usage throughout the region, averting power outages. This reduces the need to build costly, new electrical infrastructure that can drive up rates, and reduces the amount of fossil fuel bought and burned to generate power to satisfy demand.
HOW DOES ENERGY WISE REWARDS HELP THE ENVIRONMENT?
Reducing the use of fossil fuels reduces greenhouse gas emissions. By reducing electricity demand during a conservation period, Energy Wise Rewards also reduces emissions by averting the need for production of additional electricity. When load is highest and supplies are strained, the least efficient power plants must be brought into operation to meet demand or outages become likely. Lower efficiency electricity production also generally equates with higher emissions. The Energy Wise Rewards approach reduces the urgency in building additional power lines and power stations, thereby preserving our natural environment.

WHAT IS A WEB-PROGRAMMABLE THERMOSTAT?
An Energy Wise Rewards web-programmable thermostat is a digital thermostat that allows you to adjust the temperature settings of your home according to a preset schedule that you choose. This can be done either manually or through an Internet connection. This differs from other programmable thermostats you can buy and install, in that it allows you to remotely adjust your home temperature settings from any computer virtually anywhere in the world. During times of high electricity demand, your Energy Wise Rewards web-programmable thermostat will receive a radio signal to initiate a conservation period. The radio signal operates on a unique frequency and will not interfere with any other wireless devices in your home.
IF MY THERMOSTAT IS INTERNET ACCESSIBLE, HOW DO I KNOW A HACKER OR DELMARVA POWER WON’T CHANGE THE SETTINGS ON ME?
Internet access to your Energy Wise Rewards thermostat is through a web page accessed through your Delmarva Power My Account portal, with a secure password you select and only you know. We are limited to resetting your password if you forget it after you verify that you are the customer named on the account. You are the only one with control over this feature, and access is shielded behind security measures designed to protect the confidential customer information of all two million of our customers.
WHY WOULD I WANT INTERNET ACCESS?
Once you access the Internet web page, you can change your thermostat settings no matter where you are, at any time of day. This feature may be particularly useful if you suddenly find you are going to be away for an extended period or you are going to return earlier than planned, and want to change your setting.
DO I NEED TO BE HOME WHEN THE THERMOSTAT IS INSTALLED?
Yes. Our technicians will custom install the thermostat inside your home. You must first call or go online to schedule an appointment, and then be available to allow our technician entry to your home and to sign the service order confirming your satisfaction with his work.
HOW LONG WILL THE INSTALLATION TAKE?
Installation of the new thermostat and removal of your old thermostat will take approximately an hour. However, our technician will spend as much time as needed, helping you program your new thermostat and answering any questions you may have about its operation or the Energy Wise Rewards program.
WHEN WILL THE THERMOSTAT BE INSTALLED?
Generally, installation takes place within a couple weeks of your enrollment. However, installation may take longer, depending on schedule availability.
DO I HAVE TO SIGN ANYTHING?
Prior to installation, our technician will ask you to sign a service order authorizing the installation of your new equipment.
WHAT IF THERE’S A PROBLEM?
If you have a question about your energy device installation or about the program, call 1-866-353-5799, Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. for prompt customer service and technical assistance. Once the technician is onsite, he or she may determine that your air conditioning system either (a) has a problem that prevents installation without repairs being done first, or (b) is not compatible with the equipment being installed. Should this happen, the technician will inform you of the findings and your options.
HOW CAN MY PROGRAMMABLE THERMOSTAT SAVE 10% ANNUALLY ON MY COOLING AND HEATING COSTS?
The energy saving benefits of programmable thermostats has been explored by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). According to the DOE, depending on usage patterns and how effectively you program the thermostat, it is possible to save as much as 10% on home cooling and heating costs, assuming winter set backs and summer set forwards when the home is empty.
ABOUT YOUR OUTDOOR SWITCH INSTALLATION
WHAT IS AN OUTDOOR SWITCH?
An outdoor switch is a device that is connected near your exterior central air conditioning unit or heat pump. It receives a radio signal from us to cycle off and on your air conditioning compressor (not the whole A/C system) for a period defined by your chosen participation level, each half hour during selected summer days.
DO I NEED TO BE AVAILABLE WHEN THE OUTDOOR SWITCH IS INSTALLED?
The outdoor switch will be installed near your outside air conditioning unit, so it is not necessary for you to be available for the installation as long as the technician can get to the unit without obstacles such as a locked fence or a dog. Just be sure your outdoor air conditioning unit and electrical safety box are accessible to our technicians.
I AM ON THE DELMARVA POWER SYSTEM AS HAVING A MEDICAL CONDITION. AM I ABLE TO PARTICIPATE?
Yes, only you can decide what’s appropriate for you. However, we want to make sure you are aware that the temperature inside the house will increase during a conservation period, and you should take that into consideration before enrolling.
WHAT RESIDENCES AND EQUIPMENT QUALIFY FOR THE ENERGY WISE REWARDS PROGRAM?
To qualify for Energy Wise Rewards, you should be a homeowner or a resident in a multiple dwelling complex, with either a central air conditioning unit or heat pump. The following equipment and residential units are unable to receive an energy saving device and therefore do not qualify for Energy Wise Rewards:
- Geothermal heat pumps (also known as GeoExchange, earth-coupled, ground-source, or water-source heat pumps)
- Evaporative coolers (also known as swamp, desert, or air coolers)
- High Rise Condominiums
- Thermostats controlled by home alarm or home automation systems
- Some very old or very new A/C systems

I have an air conditioning system/heat pump that was installed some time ago – is it too old to participate in this program?
I have a brand new, high-end air conditioning system with specialized thermostat. Can I participate in the program?
What happens with the equipment that is removed?
I am in the Delaware Energy for Tomorrow (EFT) program. Can I participate in both programs?
I HAVE AN AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEM/HEAT PUMP THAT WAS INSTALLED SOME TIME AGO – IS IT TOO OLD TO PARTICIPATE IN THIS PROGRAM?
Our technician will assess the condition of your unit(s) when he arrives onsite for device installation. If there are problems that can be repaired or remedied, and that allow you to participate, the technician will explain the situation and your options, and you will be able to participate once the system repairs are completed by your HVAC contractor. (Our technicians are not allowed to make repairs for you.) If there are fundamental or major problems with your system, which may include you having one of a few particular brands/models of systems that are incompatible with the Energy Wise Rewards equipment, you will be notified of the situation, and what options, if any, exist for you to participate.
I HAVE A BRAND NEW, HIGH-END AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEM WITH SPECIALIZED THERMOSTAT. CAN I PARTICIPATE IN THE PROGRAM?
Some new, high-end equipment are not compatible with the Energy Wise Rewards devices and may damage your system. Our technicians have lists of incompatible equipment, and will verify your system before installing the Energy Wise Rewards device.
WHAT HAPPENS WITH THE EQUIPMENT THAT IS REMOVED?
If you currently have a load control device from any prior plan (e.g., Energy for Tomorrow®), we will remove it, and recycle and dispose of unusable components.
I AM IN THE DELAWARE ENERGY FOR TOMORROW (EFT) PROGRAM. CAN I PARTICIPATE IN BOTH PROGRAMS?
No, you cannot participate in both programs. If you are in the Delaware EFT program, you are able to convert to Energy Wise Rewards if you have a central air conditioner or heat pump. By switching to Energy Wise Rewards, you will be eligible to receive the Installation Credit. All EFT customers will be converted to Energy Wise Rewards by 2014. Once all customers are converted, the EFT program will no longer be available for A/Cs or water heaters. Water heaters are not part of the Energy Wise Rewards program.
